I’m the last person who should offer morning routine advice-more often than not I wake up half an hour after my last alarm, and end up rushing makeup-less and disheveled to work or school. Morning people are, at least to me, an entirely different species.
However, with today’s focus on organization and health, plenty of bloggers, youtubers, and celebrities have begun sharing their superhuman seeming morning routines.
There’s Ingrid Nilsen’s “Planing your Perfect Morning” video, which focuses on Ingrid’s face wash and makeup routine, typical breakfast and coffee, and clothing and morning habits. I’m still trying to figure out how she maintains such a happy and peaceful mood at 6:30 in the morning.
Searching through “morning routine” videos gives you countless other examples of perfection.
What are some things to add to your morning routine to keep yourself more calm and productive? Below is a list compiled from popular reports and interviews.
Apps like Calm, Headspace, and Buddhify offer short morning meditations. This is a great way to start off the day by clearing your mind. The benefits to meditation are never-ending. They include reduced stress, increased productivity and creativity, increased concentration, and even lowered blood pressure.
Choose your Alarm Carefully
For a while the alarm on my phone and the alarm on my stove were the same. This ended up being quite emotionally confusing when an alarm notifying me that my chocolate chip cookies were done baking triggered the same dread of waking up early for work. Using a pleasant noise that won’t become associated with anything else might be a better option. Or, playing an uplifting song might work for you. Or, forgo loud noises entirely and instead opt for a wake-up light, which gradually fills your room with light, prompting a more natural wake up.

The Most Important Meal of the Day
Typically, I opt for a protein bar in the morning. But if I have time, I enjoy making smoothies. Some of my favorites are acai and raspberry (I buy frozen acai packs from Sambazon brand) peanut butter, banana and chocolate, and green smoothies with bananas or berries and lots of kale. On the weekends, I even sometimes make acai bowls or poached eggs on avocado toast.
Overnight oats are another healthy and tasty option. Making these at night saves you time in the morning without having to compromise on quantity or quality.

Fitness guru Kayla Itsines recently revealed that, though she wakes up at 5:30 am, she typically doesn’t do much more than a 30 minute walk in the morning. She advises followers not to push their bodies to uncomfortable limits, and claims that working out too early in the morning makes her nauseous.
Morning workouts shouldn’t be intense-anything that starts getting your blood flowing will help. A short run or walk, stretching, or sit ups are all great. You might not look forward to waking up earlier to get in a work out, but some studies have shown a correlation between exercising in the morning and weight loss and improved sleep.
I rely on multiple cups of coffee a day, but I’m definitely not bragging about it. Caffeine can cause anxiety, stress, and increased heart rate. That’s not to say that its all bad. There are both positives and negatives to drinking coffee in the morning, but I would advise one against excess. That’s why I’ve recently been trying to replace my morning cup of coffee with a cup of matcha tea. I bought into the hype, and read articles that explained how matcha can energize you with making you crash, unlike coffee. After dissolving a teaspoon of matcha powder into some hot water and mixing (quite furiously), then drinking the strong green tea, I do notice a different kind of energy. Matcha contains a similar amount of caffeine as coffee does, but it makes me feel more naturally energized for a more sustained amount of time. I usually drink matcha dissolved in hot water, but you can also use matcha powder to make lattes, shots, or even baked goods.
Plan your outfits
Planning out your entire outfit the night before saves you time and energy in the morning. Plus, when you’re super disoriented at 6am, you won’t have the mental capacity to look cute. Think ahead!
Washing your face with your preferred moisturizer and cold water will instantly wake you up. I typically end up rushing out the door without putting on makeup, so I carry a bag with concealer, powder, and mascara in my purse, allowing for touch ups in the car or at the office.
Learn from the Best
Successful people rely on their mornings to jump start their motivation and work.
Benjamin Franklin is remembered for starting off each day by asking “What good shall I do today?”
Similarly, Steve Jobs began each day by looking in the mirror and asking “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”
For us night people, creating a morning routine seems impossible. But if you start slow, the benefits of taking time for your health in the morning will be worth it.
